US and Iran Agree to Two-Week Ceasefire Brokered by Pakistan, Strait of Hormuz to Reopen
After Pakistan-mediated talks between JD Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi, President Trump announces a two-week ceasefire with Iran based on Iran's 10-point peace proposal, with Iran agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
On April 7, 2026, at 6:32 p.m. Eastern Time, President Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States and Iran had agreed to a two-week ceasefire. The deal was mediated by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who coordinated negotiations between US Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iran had rejected the US 15-point proposal from March, but submitted its own 10-point peace framework, which Trump called a "workable basis on which to negotiate," saying "almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to." Under the ceasefire terms, Iran agreed to immediately and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said he agreed to the ceasefire partly because Pakistan's prime minister and army chief "requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran." The ceasefire officially took effect on April 8 local time in the Middle East. Though the deal drew relief from oil markets and international observers, questions immediately arose over whether it would hold — particularly regarding the status of the Lebanon front, where Iran claimed the ceasefire applied but the US and Israel denied this.
