Trump's Second Term Begins US-Iran Indirect Nuclear Negotiations in Geneva
The US and Iran open indirect nuclear talks in Geneva mediated by Oman the first substantive negotiations since the JCPOA collapsed with both sides expressing cautious optimism.
On February 6, 2025, the US and Iran began indirect nuclear negotiations in Geneva, with Oman serving as mediator reflecting the total absence of direct diplomatic relations between the two countries. Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led their respective delegations. Several rounds followed, including talks in Rome, with both sides expressing cautious optimism. Iran insisted on its right to enrich uranium; the US sought a complete cessation of enrichment. The talks represented the most substantive US-Iran diplomatic engagement since the JCPOA's effective collapse. Iran simultaneously signaled a willingness to reduce its enriched uranium stockpiles to very low levels. The negotiations were ultimately overtaken by Israel's June 2025 military strikes.
