Iran's Humanitarian Catastrophe: 3.2 Million Displaced, Thousands Killed, Civilian Infrastructure in Ruins

Within the first week of the US-Israeli strikes, over 884,000 Iranians are displaced. By early April, 3.2 million are internally displaced, over 1,700 civilians confirmed dead, and more than 81,000 civilian structures damaged, as the UN warns of a catastrophic humanitarian emergency.

The human cost of the 2026 Iran war quickly became staggering. By March 5, just one week after strikes began, the UN Refugee Agency reported that more than 884,000 Iranians had been forced to flee their homes, primarily evacuating major urban centers. Over subsequent weeks that figure would grow to 3.2 million internally displaced persons. The Norwegian Refugee Council described "millions in extreme uncertainty" after one month of war. Iran's government reported that strikes damaged over 81,000 civilian units, including 61,000 homes, 19,000 commercial units, and 275 medical facilities, across at least 20 provinces. By early April, Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA) documented 3,636 deaths from strikes, including 1,701 civilians, 1,221 military personnel, and 714 unclassified. In one of the worst single incidents, a US strike on a school in Minab killed an estimated 175 people, most of them children. The UN warned of a spiral of conflict causing mounting civilian harm. Refugees International called the war "on course for cataclysmic civilian harm." Aid organizations struggled to gain access to affected areas as fighting continued.
