Ceasefire Immediately Shows Cracks as Lebanon Dispute Erupts and Attacks Continue
Within hours of the ceasefire taking effect, Iran insists it covers the war in Lebanon, while the US and Israel explicitly reject that claim — and Israel launches its strongest wave of attacks on Lebanon since the war began, fracturing the fragile truce.
The April 8 ceasefire between the US and Iran began unraveling almost immediately over Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif both stated publicly that the ceasefire applied to all fronts of the war, including Lebanon, where Iranian-backed Hezbollah had continued fighting Israel throughout the 2026 Iran War. The US and Israel both rejected this reading. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that the ceasefire "does not include Lebanon," and within hours Israel launched what Lebanese officials described as the strongest wave of airstrikes on Lebanon since the start of the Iran war. Iran's IRGC accused Israel of violating the spirit of the ceasefire, while the US said the ceasefire was strictly bilateral with Iran and did not constrain Israeli operations. NPR reported that "A fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire shows cracks as attacks continue across the region." China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the international community to protect the "extremely fragile" ceasefire and "prevent the resumption of hostilities." The Lebanon dispute raised immediate doubts about whether the ceasefire could survive the two-week window before more comprehensive talks were scheduled.
